I think it is a great competition, run by Gloria Thomas, a very talented artist and a wonderful person. There is a general effort among sacred artists to find an appropriate form of liturgical art that will take us into the the new millennium, understanding the art of the past and building on it is part of that process. By entering the competition you will receive a booklet that gets you started in understanding what Gloria has termed the “poetic style.” I don’t know if I will have time to submit an entry this year, but the deadline is January 1 2018, so I will have to give it some thought.

I’ll need to pray about it, but I’ll probably enter again. One of my 2013 entries is in that collage above; bottom row, third from the left!

The competition booklet is a valuable resource for those trying to piece together the conventions of Medieval style art. I think Gloria’s insights are right on, especially about the role of analogy in Medieval thought and art.
